The world does not need yet another story where the hero/heroine is double-crossed by those supposedly supporting him or her. It's been done. It is no longer a surprising twist. At this point, your audience has seen it so many times that they automatically suspect anyone who seems to be on the hero's side.
You know what would be new? Something that would really blow your audience's minds? A story where everybody is exactly what they appear to be. Nobody would be expecting it. They'd be waiting for the double-cross right up until the end credits rolled, and then they'd probably make up something themselves based on paranoid interpretations of lines randomly selected from throughout the story.
